As of December 31, 2011, the book value of non-current financial assets amounting to € 60.3 million included non-current financial assets available-for-sale (investments) with a book value of € 32.6 million (2010: € 57.2 million) that were carried at cost since fair value could not be reliably determined.

Changes in the scope of consolidation totaling € 92.7 million include first-time consolidations of € 164.9 million (2010: € 4,612.6 million) and deconsolidations of € 257.6 million (2010: € 192.8 million). The first-time consolidations relate almost exclusively to the acquisition of the microbiology business of Biotest AG as well as Amnis Corporation, Seattle, WA (USA), and the first-time consolidation of Beijing Skywing Technology Co. Ltd., Beijing, China. The deconsolidations relate to Merck Capital Asset Management, Malta, as well as the divestments of our Crop BioScience business and Serono Contracting Ltd., United Kingdom.
