From a regional perspective, Europe represented 36% of Group sales in the second quarter of 2012 (Q2 2011: 41%) and reported a 2.2% decline in organic sales triggered by flat to declining organic sales in all divisions. Soft economic conditions, pricing pressure and uncertainty over the future of the Eurozone all contributed to this weakness. North America contributed 20% of Group sales for the first time (Q2 2011: 18%), with the region generating organic sales growth of 12.0% in the second quarter of 2012. The strong performance in North America was led by the Merck Serono division, which generated a solid performance in all therapeutic areas and especially from higher sales of the multiple sclerosis drug, Rebif®. Emerging Markets, which consists of Latin America and Asia excluding Japan, produced 35% of Group sales in the second quarter of 2012 (Q2 2011: 33%), a 9.8% organic increase. Strong growth in Latin America more than offset a softer performance in China. Finally, Rest of World, which is Japan, Africa, and Australia/Oceania, generated 9% of Group sales (Q2 2011: 8%), growing 7.4% organically.
