Net interest amounting to € –205.3 million (2011: € –186.4 million) worsened in comparison with 2011 owing to lower interest income from cash investments due to the general decline in interest rates. In addition, one-time effects were incurred in 2011. Despite a negative effect from the dedesignation of a € 250.0 million interest rate swap, interest expenses declined as a result of the repayment of two bonds, each with a nominal volume of € 500.0 million, in March and December 2012.

The interest portion of the additions to pension provisions and other non-current provisions decreased due to transfers of plan assets to a Contractual Trust Arrangement in the fourth quarter of 2011 and in the fourth quarter of 2012.
