Report on Expected Developments

As a result of the performance in the second quarter of 2012, Merck is updating its forecast for FY 2012. Merck expects the markets for pharmaceuticals as well as over-the-counter drugs to grow driven by volumes in Emerging Markets. For its Liquid Crystals products, the company expects volumes to remain strong in the third quarter and a softer demand in the fourth quarter, also as a result of some normalization of its currently high market share. Finally, Merck continues to see solid demand for Life Science products, driven also by continued volume growth in biologic-based drugs.
